China and Canada Jointly Release Statement on Climate Change and Clean Growth

Chinese president Xi Jinping met with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the Diaoyutai Guest House in Beijing on 5th, December, 2017. Xi Jinping remarked that, China and Canada need to fully tap potential and create more bright spots in cooperation in areas such as energy resources, science and innovation, aviation, finance, modern agriculture and clean technology. China will continue to support capable Chinese enterprises in investing in Canada and welcome Canadian enterprises to take an active part in Belt and Road Initiative. Xi also called on both sides to strengthen cooperation on key areas such as climate change and coordination within multilateral frameworks.
Trudeau commented that, Canada is committed to deepening relations with China on the basis of mutual respect and mutual trust, boosting cooperation on economy, trade and people-to-people exchanges and intensifying coordination on major global and regional issues.
On the afternoon of December 4, 2017, Premier Li Keqiang and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada held the 2nd China-Canada Prime Ministers' Annual Dialogue at the Great Hall of the People. The two sides agreed to issue China-Canada Joint Statement on Climate Change and Clean Growth, mainly covering the following areas: first, China and Canada shall accelerate two countries’ efforts to mitigate climate change, build resilience, and support clean growth. Second, both China and Canada reiterated that the Paris Agreement is irreversible and that it will not be renegotiated.
Third, Canada and China agree to establish appropriate ministerial dialogues on cooperation on climate change and clean growth. The Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Change will be chaired by Environment and Climate Change Canada and the National Development and Reform Commission of China. Fourth, the Ministerial Dialogue on Clean Energy will be chaired by Natural Resources Canada and the National Energy Administration of China.
